I live in the shadows, that place between light and dark. I can live in obscurity without being in total darkness. I can move into the light but retreat when I become too exposed. It is the place that I feel most at home. Always wishing to be in the light, but only safe in the shadows.

Bridge Shadow
Under the Salt Point Bridge (#2). I could have sat there all day, listening to the water and enjoying my shadow privacy. I noticed a swallow nest under the bridge and thought of the babies who would spend all of their early days in the shadows. How euphoric the first flight must be when they hit the daylight for the first time.

Anchor Shadow
A canal shot from Gouda, The Netherlands. The mirrored, inverted shadow of the boat anchor is beautiful in in its serenity.
Cranberry Shadow
Stopping for a morning juice, the shadow produced through my glass and cranberry juice was beautiful and unique.
Untitled
Taken at Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. I love the amoeba-like shape of the shadows on the road to the palace.
Lair of the "Naked Snail"
Taken at the cloister in Engelberg, Germany, A "naked snail" (slug) retreats from the light of day into the cool safety of the shadow of the bricks. For some, shadows are life.
Stream Shadow
Taken at a stream in Pfohlbach, Germany, the canopy of the treas creates a wonderous, almost paw-like effect on the stream.
Trio
Taken in over a stream in Germany, this picture has two unique shadow sets; the stream and those watching the stream.
Evil Shadows: Dachau
Equally horrific were the shadows produced by the ovens used to ashen those killed. Sometimes it is not the light alone that exposes evil, but the shadow, too.
Evil Shadows: Dachau
Taken in the gas chamber at Dachau. It was bad enough to imagine the carnage and inhumanity that occurred in this room, but this window seemed the most appalling of all. While the light and grating produces a spectacular contrasting effect, it seems perverse that it was in the "shower" room. I wondered how many ended their life pulling at the grating that was blocking the only access to the light and fresh air. So evil.
Chain Shadow
Taken at the same waterfront, I love the shadow and contrast produced by the rusty chain over the water. So many effects and textures in one shot.
Rope Shadow
The shadow of the rope at the river front, cast over the moving water, produced a wonderful "shadow ripple" effect
Flower Shadow
Taken in my hospital recovery room in Prague. The only light was one night light which produces a neat, understated shadow of the orses beside my chair. It seemed somewhat melancholy.
Jenga Shadow
Canal Bridge
Taken in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The sunlight reflecting off the water to break the dark shadow created by the canal bridge. Aqua aurora borealis!
Superimposed
A nifty effect with the shadow of the tree superimposed over the shadow of the blinds that sits behind it. I never noticed before. Interesting how so many shadow possibilities exist, but how fleeting many of them, like this one, are.
Branch Shadows
Another shot by my friend. I really like the shadows because the branches are not visible, so it really opens up the imagination to possibilities. My first thought was a witch's arms, but when I turned my head, I thought of icicles hanging from the eaves.
Driftwood
Also sent by a friend, the vertical shot of the log and its shadow allows the shadow to elongate the driftwood's trunk. Makes me wonder where the shadow ends ans what lays at the end.
Untitled
Submitted by a friend, I love the lushness of the greenery and the red berries peeking out from the shadows. The shadows allow the light to accentuate the green and red.
The Blind
The amazing light show was played out on my kitchen wall. The sanimated effect of the blinds was produced by the cedars in front of the window blowing in the wind, with their shadows constantly breaking up the light into the blind.
