I live in the shadows, that place between light and dark. I can live in obscurity without being in total darkness. I can move into the light but retreat when I become too exposed. It is the place that I feel most at home. Always wishing to be in the light, but only safe in the shadows.

Teeny Tiny Shadow

A shame the quality is so poor, but at least it allows me to recall the experience of the tiny insect on my bedroom ceiling traveling alone with its relatively ginormous shadow. Don't know how long I watched them for, but I was truly fascinated. The shadow was epic, especially of the insect's antennae.

Shadow Leaves

The shadows of some of the plant leaves in my office in the morning. I love plant shadows!

Anchor Shadow

A canal shot from Gouda, The Netherlands. The mirrored, inverted shadow of the boat anchor is beautiful in in its serenity.

Untitled

Taken at Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. I love the amoeba-like shape of the shadows on the road to the palace.

Lair of the "Naked Snail"

Taken at the cloister in Engelberg, Germany, A "naked snail" (slug) retreats from the light of day into the cool safety of the shadow of the bricks. For some, shadows are life.

Stream Shadow

Taken at a stream in Pfohlbach, Germany, the canopy of the treas creates a wonderous, almost paw-like effect on the stream.

Trio

Taken in over a stream in Germany, this picture has two unique shadow sets; the stream and those watching the stream.

Flower Shadow

Taken in my hospital recovery room in Prague. The only light was one night light which produces a neat, understated shadow of the orses beside my chair. It seemed somewhat melancholy.

Walking Tall

Just loved seeing how tall I could be!

Canal Bridge

Taken in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The sunlight reflecting off the water to break the dark shadow created by the canal bridge. Aqua aurora borealis!

Superimposed

A nifty effect with the shadow of the tree superimposed over the shadow of the blinds that sits behind it. I never noticed before. Interesting how so many shadow possibilities exist, but how fleeting many of them, like this one, are.

Branch Shadows

Another shot by my friend. I really like the shadows because the branches are not visible, so it really opens up the imagination to possibilities. My first thought was a witch's arms, but when I turned my head, I thought of icicles hanging from the eaves.

Driftwood

Also sent by a friend, the vertical shot of the log and its shadow allows the shadow to elongate the driftwood's trunk. Makes me wonder where the shadow ends ans what lays at the end.

Untitled

Submitted by a friend, I love the lushness of the greenery and the red berries peeking out from the shadows. The shadows allow the light to accentuate the green and red.

Living in the Shadows (5)

I started this little series to honour the living things that exist on the shadows, as I was able to find so many examples where I was. This was absolutely the most striking example. While walking down a path, I came across a series of narrow channels running across the path. I originally thought they were erosion channels caused by runoff, but upon closer examination I was stunned by what the shadows revealed. They were actually paths, worn deep into the ground, by the traffic of ants...thousands and thousands of ants. Each path seemed to go from a colony to a single tree, where the ants would scour the tree for their needs. As I watched this particularly shadowy path (sections of it were actually tunneled under grass), I could see ants returning with seeds, dead insects, ant eggs from other colonies successfully raided. It was incredible! I realized at that moment how truly trivial and fragile humans are on the Earth compared to the the power of the ant.

A close up of the above.

Living in the Shadows (4)

Upon reflection, it is amazing how many living things actually require a shadowy environment to survive. This plant is but one them the many needing this environment. I love the the softness of the moss-like plant in the shadows. So soft.

Living in the Shadows (3)

Not everyone living in the shadows is an animal. Found the mushroom poking out of the ground on the side of a path.

Living in the Shadows (2)

Found this slippery fellow lurking in the bullrushes on the lake shore. Fortunately, he decided to leave the shadows and enter the light, perhaps looking for food.
